Christopher Bedford was appointed the Helen and Charles Schwab Director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) in 2022. An innovative and dynamic museum leader, Bedford has focused his career on expanding community engagement and developing programs with national and international impact. Before joining SFMOMA, he served as Director of The Baltimore Museum of Art (2016–22) and curated the U.S. Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale featuring artist Mark Bradford. With nearly two decades of experience, he has led major exhibitions and collaborations with artists such as Mark Bradford, Chris Burden, Mickalene Thomas, and Pipilotti Rist. Born in Scotland and raised in the U.S. and U.K., Bedford holds degrees from Oberlin College and Case Western Reserve University and has contributed widely to publications including Art in America, Artforum, and Frieze.
