WE ARE A MUSEUM. WE ARE CONTEMPORARY. WE CARE.
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), is one of the leading institutions dedicated to the collection, preservation, and presentation of contemporary art created after 1940. As the only artist-founded museum in Los Angeles, MOCA serves as a dynamic platform for showcasing innovative ideas and fostering dialogue about the art of our time.
History
Founded in 1979, MOCA was established by a group of artists who envisioned a museum devoted entirely to contemporary art. Over the decades, MOCA has grown into a cultural landmark with three distinct sites: MOCA Grand Avenue, the main exhibition space; The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, a transformed warehouse for large-scale installations; and Double Negative, Michael Heizer’s monumental earthwork in Nevada. Through groundbreaking exhibitions and bold curatorial choices, MOCA has become a global leader in advancing contemporary artistic expression.
Mission
MOCA’s mission is to collect, present, and interpret the art of our time. The museum is committed to supporting artists, fostering scholarly research, and encouraging diverse perspectives that challenge and expand the understanding of contemporary art. By embracing innovation and accessibility, MOCA strives to make the experience of art inclusive, inspiring, and relevant to audiences around the world.
