The Museum of Modern Art: Where Art Lives.
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), located in Midtown Manhattan, is one of the world’s leading institutions dedicated to modern and contemporary art, housing an unparalleled collection that spans painting, sculpture, design, photography, film, and new media.
At The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1, we celebrate creativity, openness, tolerance, and generosity. We aim to be inclusive places—both onsite and online—where diverse cultural, artistic, social, and political positions are welcome. We’re committed to sharing the most thought-provoking modern and contemporary art, and hope you will join us in exploring the art, ideas, and issues of our time.
History
Founded in 1929 by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, and Mary Quinn Sullivan, MoMA was created to champion modern art and artists. Originally located in the Heckscher Building, the museum moved to its current site on 53rd Streetin 1939. Over the decades, MoMA has undergone multiple expansions, including a major renovation completed in 2019, which significantly increased its gallery space and enhanced the visitor experience.
Mission
MoMA’s mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret the art of modern and contemporary times. Through groundbreaking exhibitions, innovative programs, and educational initiatives, the museum seeks to inspire creativity, foster dialogue, and make modern art accessible to audiences worldwide.
