M+ Hong Kong
A Global Perspective on Contemporary Visual Culture, Rooted in Asia.
M+ is Asia’s global museum of contemporary art, located in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. Opened in November 2021, it is one of the world’s largest museums dedicated to modern and contemporary visual culture.
The museum brings together visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture, with a particular emphasis on twentieth- and twenty-first-century artistic practices. Its multidisciplinary collections encompass works from Hong Kong, mainland China, other parts of Asia, and beyond.
Designed by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with TFP Farrells and Arup, the landmark museum overlooks Victoria Harbour. Its distinctive architecture features expansive exhibition galleries, cinemas, research facilities, and a monumental LED facade displaying moving image artworks.
Through exhibitions, collections, research, and public programs, M+ serves as an international platform for contemporary visual culture, connecting Asian perspectives with global artistic developments.
History
M+ was conceived as part of Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District, an ambitious cultural development project designed to establish a major international arts destination along Victoria Harbour.
The museum began developing its collection in 2012, with a focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century visual culture. In 2013, Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron was selected to design the museum through an international competition. Construction began in 2014, and the building reached its structural completion milestone in 2018.
On November 12, 2021, M+ officially opened to the public, marking a significant milestone in Hong Kong's cultural development.
Since its opening, M+ has established itself as a major international institution for contemporary visual culture. Its collections include the M+ Sigg Collection, one of the world's most comprehensive collections of contemporary Chinese art, alongside significant holdings in design, architecture, moving image, and visual art.
Today, M+ continues to promote artistic exchange and scholarship, positioning Hong Kong as an important center for contemporary art and visual culture in Asia and beyond.
Mission
M+ is dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting twentieth- and twenty-first-century visual culture, encompassing visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture. Rooted in Asia with a global perspective, the museum seeks to inspire creativity, foster cross-cultural dialogue, and expand the understanding of contemporary visual culture.
