Guggenheim New York

Art for Everyone.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, perched masterfully on Fifth Avenue’s Museum Mile, stands as one of the world’s most iconic institutions dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Designed by visionary architect Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1959, the museum’s spiraling, cylindrical form—complete with a sweeping helical ramp—radically challenged conventional gallery layouts and redefined the museum-going experience. Inside, visitors encounter a stunning fusion of architecture and art, with exhibition spaces tailored to encourage continuous visual flow. Its permanent collection, numbering around 8,000 works, includes Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early Modern artworks, as well as contemporary masterpieces. This collection, rooted in private gifts and major acquisitions over time, reflects the Guggenheim’s enduring mission to present art that pushes boundaries. With its architectural presence, thought-provoking exhibitions, and commitment to accessibility, the Guggenheim remains a hallmark of modern art, drawing nearly 861,000 visitors in 2023 alone and inviting all audiences to engage with art in a truly transformative space.

  • History

The Guggenheim’s story begins with its founder, Solomon R. Guggenheim, who — inspired by the avant-garde ideals of Hilla von Rebay — shifted his collecting focus in the 1920s toward non-objective art. This passion led to the founding of the Museum of Non‑Objective Painting in 1939, which later became the Guggenheim Museum in 1952, following Guggenheim’s death. As the collection outgrew early spaces, the foundation commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright in 1943 to design a radical new home that would embody both form and function. Fifteen years of design and construction culminated in the museum’s 1959 opening, a bold architectural statement that stirred debate yet ultimately became an architectural landmark. Over the following decades, the museum expanded its exhibition capacity and infrastructure through renovations and the addition of an annex and education center—most notably in the early 1990s—and emerged as a global cultural beacon. The museum’s ethos and reach have also been extended globally through partnerships with sister institutions in Bilbao and Venice, establishing the Guggenheim as a major force in the international presentation of modern art.

  • Mission

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation are dedicated to fostering a deeper public understanding and appreciation of modern and contemporary art as forms of visual expression and cultural dialogue. Its mission extends beyond the exhibition of art: it entails the collection, conservation, interpretation, and scholarly study of works spanning the late 19th century to the present. With its architecturally distinctive galleries, the Guggenheim offers immersive experiences that encourage visitors to connect with art in unexpected ways. The museum supports dynamic exhibitions, educational programming, and global collaborations—including the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao—to elevate public engagement with art across cultural and geographic boundaries. Ultimately, the Guggenheim seeks to unite extraordinary architecture with groundbreaking art, enabling audiences around the world to discover new perspectives and the transformative power of creativity.
